The extent to which the gross volume of the soil is unoccupied by solid particles. The air space in a soil at field miusture capacity is termed "non-capillary porosity"; that portion in a soil that is not filled by water when the soil is wet, but well drained, is known as "capillary porosity". ( BCFT).
The degree to which the total volume of soil, sediment, or rock is permeated with pores or cavities, generally expressed as a percentage of the whole volume unoccupied by solid particles.
