Definitions for "Snow density"
Ratio between the volume of melt water derived from a sample of snow and the initial volume of the sample. This is numerically equal to the specific gravity of the snow.
The density of snow (usually expressed in units of kg/m3) is a measure of the mass of snow per unit volume, and is an indicator of the compactness of a snowpack.
The weight of snow mass per unit volume. Very low density snow "fluff" may weigh 20 to 40 kilograms per cubic meter. Typical new snow densities are 70 to 120 Kg M-3, while dense old snow may reach 400 to 500 and firn 600 Kg M-3. The density of bubble-free ice is 917 Kg M-3.
