An email protocol used to transfer email messages between two servers. In addition to this protocol, another protocol is needed to connect between the server and the client before the client can receive messages; e.g., POP.
The standard email protocol on the Internet, a TCP/IP protocol that defines the message format and the message transfer agent, which stores and forwards the mail. SMTP was originally designed only for ASCII text, however MIME and other encoding methods enable program and multimedia files to be attached to email messages. SMTP servers route SMTP messages throughout the Internet to a mail server, such as POP3 or IMAP4, which provides a message store for incoming mail.
