According to "Schalliol is our Family Name," the definitive volume on the Schalliol family, the earliest recorded instance of the family is traceable to Francois de Chaillol. In 1323, Francois was a cavalry captain from the Chaillol village in the St. Michel de Chaillol parish in the south east (of what are now called the) French Alps.
