Shiite Iranian/Persian dynasty that fought against the Ottoman rulers.
The ruling dynasty of Persia (modern-day Iran) from 1501 to 1736, founded by Shah Ismail I (r. 1501-24). After reaching its peak under Shah 'Abbas I (r. 1587-1628), the dynasty declined, and was brought to an end by Nadir Shah in 1736.
