A form of chip packaging that is similar to DIMMs to be used with the next generation of Direct DRAM memory subsystems.
a form of memory connection much like a SIMM or DIMM
New type of memory, not very common
Rambus Interface Memory Module - A small circuit board with a few memory chips on it. RIMM is a standard of a main module that uses RDRAMs and Direct RDRAMs. One RIMM has 8 pieces of RDRAMs on each of the two sides (16 pieces in total) and is used in pairs (= 32 pieces of RDRAMs). Its maximum bus clock is 800MHz and the maximum data transfer rate is 1.6GB/sec. A RIMM requires 2.5V of voltage and has 184 terminal pins.
Rambus inline memory module. Also known as RDRAM, this type of memory has the potential to run at speeds up to 800MHz as opposed to SDRAM's maximum of 133MHz. Speed is also increased by processing instructions 16bits at a time rather than 8bit.
Rambus in-line memory module] A small circuit board that contains RDRAM chips and connects to the system board. See also DIMM.
RIMM refers to the type of module used for Rambus RDRAM memory. A RIMM is similar to a DIMM (Dual inline memory module), but has a different pin count. Rambus trademarked the term RIMM as an entire word--it's actually not an acronym as one might assume. RIMMs transfer data in 16-bit chunks. Because of their fast access and transfer rates, RIMMs have an aluminum sheath called a "heat spreader," which covers the chips and prevents overheating.
Rambus In-line Memory Module: This is the form factor for Rambus RDRAM. By comparison, SDRAM is mainly found on DIMMs, and EDO RAM is usually on SIMMs. RIMMs require that if you do not fill all RIMM slots with RDRAM memory, you must keep the empty slots filled with termination boards to ensure that the high speed Rambus memory signals do not bounce improperly.
A type of memory module used on newer motherboards produced by Rambus, Inc.
(Rambus Inline Memory Module)--A form of chip packaging that is similar to DIMMs using Direct Rambus DRAM memory subsystems.
The trademarked name for a Direct Rambus memory module. A RIMM(tm) conforms to the DIMM form factor and transfers data 16 bits at a time.
