A sturdy virtue that was once found among the Pantidoodles inhabiting the lower part of the peninsula of Oque. Some feeble attempts were made by returned missionaries to introduce it into several European countries, but it appears to have been imperfectly expounded. An example of this faulty exposition is found in the only extant sermon of the pious Bishop Rowley, a characteristic passage from which is here given: "Now righteousness consisteth not merely in a holy state of mind, nor yet in performance of religious rites and obedience to the letter of the law. It is not enough that one be pious and just: one must see to it that others also are in the same state; and to this end compulsion is a proper means. Forasmuch as my injustice may work ill to another, so by his injustice may evil be wrought upon still another, the which it is as manifestly my duty to estop as to forestall mine own tort. Wherefore if I would be righteous I am bound to restrain my neighbor, by force if needful, in all those injurious enterprises from which, through a better disposition and by the help of Heaven, I do myself restrain."
The quality or state of being righteous; holiness; purity; uprightness; rectitude.
The state of being right with God; justification; the work of Christ, which is the ground of justification.
Thoughts, words, and actions that are in accordance with God's will. All such acts ultimately come from God, working through the believer.
the ability to stand in God's presence without the sense of sin, guilt, fear or inferiority; justification.
This is the state of right relatedness to all the interactions and relationship which maintain equilibrium, balance and integrity in the universe. It is, therefore a state of impeccability. To be in "right relationship" (to the Ground of our Being) and therefore the Ground of All Being is to be righteous. It is not our own righteousness (rightness) but the perfect alignment of our being with what is True, Good, and Right already which therefore results in a way of life that lives in a balanced and harmonious manner.
Living in right relationship with God and others. Unrighteous behavior would tend to undermine right relationship with God. Righteousness is understood in terms of right relationship with God and others and not primarily in ethical or legal terms.
Being good, just, and blameless. All are called to a life of humble obedience to God. However, acts of righteousness cannot earn salvation. Rather, righteousness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit, and the way in which Christians respond with living faith to God's gift of salvation. See Matt. 5:6, 20; Rom. 4:3; Gal. 5:22; James 2:14-26.
is the essential perfection of God. The righteousness of the law is the perfect obedience which God's law demands. The righteousness revealed in the gospel is the righteousness won by the perfect obedience and innocent suffering and death of our Savior. God credits this righteousness to us and we receive it by faith (Romans 1:17, Romans 3:21-24).
Righteousness in this article refers to the important theological concept in Islam, Judaism and Christianity. In one sense, it is an attribute of God whereby He is said to be holy and righteous. In another sense it refers to the righteousness of man; either his inherent righteousness (or the lack thereof), or his potential right standing before God or as being "judged" or "reckoned" as righteous by God (as the patriarch Abraham was in Genesis).
