The Public Service comprises the departments listed in the First Schedule to the State Sector Act 1988. The number has varied between 36 and 39 in recent years and currently sits at 37. Sometimes described as the first, or inner, tier of the 'three tier State', the other two tiers being crown entities and state-owned enterprises. Narrower than both 'state sector' and 'public sector'.
The "public service", written without capitalization, refers to all federal departments and agencies that receive their funding through Treasury Board appropriations. A subset of this group, the "Public Service", with the "P" and "S" capitalized, refers to those departments and agencies, that are subject to the Public Service Employment Act.
In this Profile the term Public Service refers to the body of employees employed under Part 3 of the Public Sector Management Act.
The collective administrative personnel of government, also known as the civil service.
refers variously to all those who are active in public life, including elected officials, individuals who are employed by the state, and individuals who are employed under the provisions of the Public Service Employment Act. The term also refers to the institution whose members act as an independent, non-partisan and professional branch of government that supports the government and its ministers in the development and implementation of its policy agenda, including the management and delivery of government programs and public services.
Also called the civil service, this is the part of government that provides services to the public, for example ensuring access to water and sanitation.
Public Service is a compilation EP released in 1981 on Smoke 7 Records with songs by Hardcore punk bands Bad Religion, Circle One, Disability, RF7 and Redd Kross (here still named "Red Cross"). The album was re-released in 2003 on the Puke & Vomit label.
