The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a program co-sponsored by the College Board and the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. For many students, the PSAT/NMSQT is the first step on the road to college. It assesses skills developed through years of study in a wide range of courses as well as through experiences outside the classroom. The PSAT/NMSQT has three parts: Verbal, Math and Writing Skills.
Administered in October of the junior year, the PSAT is a practice test. Scores are used to determine those students who qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition. Students and counselors use the PSAT as a diagnostic tool to determine testing strengths and weaknesses, but PSAT results are not part of a student's permanent record.
The Preliminary SAT is a standardized test administered to high school juniors and seniors each October. The PSAT has the same format as the SAT, and serves as a rough predictor for SAT performance. PSAT scores from the junior year count toward National Merit Scholarship.
The Preliminary Standard Aptitude Test (PSAT) is administered by the College Board. You may take the PSAT in order to familiarize yourself with the test and kinds of questions you'll encounter on the SAT. The PSAT is also used as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholar competiton. This test is usually taken during the junior year of high school, but a practice PSAT may be given during the sophomore year. Like the SAT, the PSAT use multiple choice questions to test verbal and mathematical reasoning ability.
The Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test (PSAT) is a two-hour test given once a year in October. As with the SAT, you receive separate math and verbal scores. In addition, the test also includes a third scored section testing English grammar. Each subject is scored on a scale of 20 to 80 and these scores are combined to create your National Merit Scholarship selection index.
