the hydrolysis of proteins into peptides and amino acids by cleavage of their peptide bonds
The breakdown, or degradation, of proteins into their building blocks, the amino acids. Proteolysis is essential for cell survival because some proteins must be broken down in order to carry out their biological functions, and because resulting amino acids are converted into energy molecules or recycled to produce new proteins. (See proteinase.)
catabolism of proteins as in the lung of cigarette smokers leading to emphysema.
Protein breakdown. The hydrolysis of a protein molecule into amino acids by proteolytic enzymes.
The process in which proteins chains are lysed (cut) as part of their digestion.
The hydrolysis of proteins, usually by enzyme action, into simpler substances.
The degradation of proteins by proteolytic enzymes e.g. protease and peptidase.
Proteolysis is the directed degradation (digestion) of proteins by cellular enzymes called proteases or by intramolecular digestion.
