A plastic with a wide range of applications, used in pipes, profiles, bottles, cable insulation etc. Its environmental impact has been the subject of intense debate. Heavy metals may be discharged from stabilizers used in PVC items; and when PVC is burned, dioxins (some of which are highly toxic and cause skin disorders, cancer and gene damage) may be released.
