(pol´ lee teen) [Gr. poly: many + taenia: ribbon] • An adjective describing giant interphase chromosomes, such as those found in the salivary glands of fly larvae. The characteristic, reproducible pattern of bands and bulges seen on these chromosomes has provided a method for preparing detailed chromosome maps of several organisms.
