A persistent and irrational fear of a specific object, activity, or situation that results in a compelling desire to avoid the phobic stimulus.
A strong fear of a particular thing or event. The fear can be so strong that it interferes with the person's life. In the case of dental phobia it can be approached in two ways. The patient can be helped to overcome their fear in order to attend the dentist by a multitude of techniques e.g. IV sedation. Also, therapy can be aimed at trying to re-train the mind in order to get rid of the phobia: behavioural management/therapy.
