Paulina can refer to several women, the most notable being three in Ancient Rome, the mother, a sister and a niece of Emperor Hadrian.
According to Greek myth, Paulina is one the dryads associated with Daphne, though she is told to have no mother or father. There is disagreement regarding whether Paulina is in fact a tree spirit, as opposed to a higher creature who merely takes on the dryad form. Some sources claim that Paulina is abstractly referred to in the dramatic works of Euripides and Aristophanes as an incarnation of Artemis, the virgin goddess of the moon and wildlife.
