Definitions for "PARAMAHANSA"
A spiritual title signifying a master. Only a true guru on a qualified disciple may confer it. Paramahansa literally means "supreme swan." In the Hindu scriptures, the hansa or swan symbolizes spiritual discrimination.
Romanized to paramahansa (also paramhansa and paramahamsa), is a Sanskrit title of honor applied to Hindu spiritual teachers of lofty status who are regarded as having attained enlightenment. The title may be translated as "transcendent swan," and is based on the individual's metaphorical ability to fly to transcendent heights, and there to swim in the sea of consciousness, unsullied by the illusion of separateness from the Divine.
