A medical patient who receives treatment at a hospital, especially in an emergency room, but is not admitted to stay overnight. Distinguished from inpatient, who is assigned to a room to reside there while being treated.
A term which refers to an individual who is not hospitalized, but who visits a clinic, laboratory, emergency facilities, or dispensary for diagnosis and/or treatment. Services may include x-ray, blood work, oral surgery, urinalysis, physical therapy (see term for definition), and psychotherapy (see term for definition).
A person receiving mental health services from a community mental health center, a private psychiatrist, or any other mental health professional while living independently, with friends or relatives, or in a boarding home.
