In printing, a type of character spacing whereby each character occupies the same amount of horizontal space on the line, regardless of the width of the character (l receives the same space as m). Monospacing is generally considered to be suitable for tabular data because alignment of columns is made easier by the uniform width of characters. Monospacing is also called fixed-pitch spacing, fixed spacing, and fixed-width spacing. Most printed matter uses proportional spacing, the opposite of monospacing. In proportional spacing, the different characters have different widths (e.g., o receives more space than I). Proportionately spacing gives a more professional appearance.
