Definitions for "minimisation"
the act of reducing something to the least possible amount or degree or position
A technique used to correct the imbalance in patient characteristics across treatment groups. Participants in a clinical trial will be assigned to a group in a manner that will cause the least imbalance (minimising the imbalance) in certain characteristics (or prognostic factors).
'Minimisation' is a method of adaptive stratified randomization as used in clinical trials, as described by Pocock and Simon (Pocock SJ, Simon R. Sequential treatment assignment with balancing for prognostic factors in the controlled clinical trial, Biometrics 31:102-115,1975).
