The Greek word for imitation. Aristotle used the term to define the role of art as an "imitation of nature." Cuddon suggests that mimesis means representation, relating it to verisimilitude (396). Harmon and Holman add that Northrup Frye used it more narrowly for works that imitate characters on a human level, contrary to the super-human epic hero, for instance (314).
