IXI Metroplexes are geographic study areas created by IXI as an alternative to both DMAs and MSAs. Metroplexes were created for two reasons. First, DMAs can be irregularly-shaped and vary considerably in terms of population. Second, MSAs do not cover the entire continental U.S., Hawaii or Alaska. Metroplexes are county-based market study areas that generally have at least 100,000 households and are somewhat homogenous in terms of population. There are 264 Metroplexes and they cover the entire continental U.S., Hawaii, and Alaska. ( Back to the top)
A metroplex is large metropolitan area containing several cities and their suburbs. It is also sometimes used as an alternative to metropolis or megalopolis, which is a chain of continuous metropolitan areas. The term was coined for, and is still commonly used to describe, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.
