At a mention the court will not hear the facts. It is a date when both sides come to the court to sort out what is going to happen, and when certain applications may be made to the Magistrate. The first court appearance is always a mention.

is a court date which allows the Magistrate to check on the progress of an AVO application. When the matter is 'mentioned' the Magistrate hears information about the case – for example, whether the complainant is proceeding with the AVO application, and whether the defendant will agree to the order. If the defendant does not agree, the Magistrate will adjourn the matter. At a mention date, a complainant can apply for an interim order. The Magistrate needs to be satisfied that an interim order is "necessary or appropriate" and may need to hear brief evidence to decide.
