Definitions for "Medications"
Benzodiazepines (such as Valium®or Librium®) are sometimes used during the first days after a person stops drinking to help him or her safely withdraw from alcohol. Because these medications have the potential to be addictive, they are not used beyond the first few days of detox. Naltrexone is sometimes used to help an alcoholic remain sober. Antabuse® is also used to help prevent a relapse by making the user feel sick if s/he drinks alcohol.
