Least Cost Routing. A telephone system feature that automatically chooses the "least cost" long distance and local lines to send the call on. The caller typically dials 9 and then the 10-digit telephone number. The call is then routed over the least costly service.
This process means searching for the optimum traffic routes via one or several traffic routings enabling a cost reduction. It is possible to configure the optimum solution between best QoS and lowest cost.

Least Cost Routing. A technique where the telephone system modifies the digits dialled by a user making an outside call in order to route the call via a low-cost carrier. Typically the routing decision is based on what number has been dialled and it is often possible to have several carriers configured on the same telephone system to take advantage of the cheapest rout to any destination. See also Automatic Route Selection (ARS). Typically ARS incorporates and builds on the capabilities of LCR.
A feature of telephone systems in which calls are automatically switched so as to use the least costly carrier based on the destination phone number. See also ARS (AUTOMATIC ROUTE SELECTION).
