n. A separate continental plate that existed from the Late Precambrian to Silurian, consisting of the major part of North America, northwest Ireland, Scotland, Greenland, and pieces of Norway and Russia.
The term now used for an ancient continent. Fragments of this are preserved on either side of the North Atlantic, including Greenland, Canada and much of Scotland. The Laurentian continent collided both with Baltica (Scandinavia) and Avalonia (much of England etc) during the Caledonian orogeny.
