A condition resulting from low stores of iron, caused by inadequate dietary intake, blood loss, or malabsorption of iron. It is characterized by a reduction of the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Symptoms include paleness of skin, weakness, shortness of breath, lack of appetite, and a general slowing of vital body functions.
