Going between, or connecting, cities or towns; as, interurban electric railways.
An electrically operated transit system linking a series of town to each other, or two a larger urban area. built to a heavier standard than trolley systems, they sometimes handled freight as well.
Prototype railroads and railroad cars that were self- propelled with electrical power pick-up from an overhead wire catenary, or from a third rail suspended alongside the track. The cars ran from city-to-city as well as inside the city limits and hence the name. (See also trolley and traction.)
