Describes a condition in which a valve is not able to prevent back-flow of blood. The resulting back-flow is termed a regurgitation.
In a heart valve, the inability of a valve to close completely, allowing blood leaks back through the valve. Small amounts of insufficiency may be inconsequential, but larger amounts may require valve surgery.
