A short transposable element found in bacteria.
A transposable nucleotide sequence that only encodes the functions required for its own transposition. Insertion sequences are typically less than 5 kb. Synonymous with "insertion element".
A mobile piece of bacterial DNA (several hundred nucleotide pairs in length) that is capable of inactivating a gene into which it inserts. Small simple transposons. See transposable genetic element.
