Definitions for "Impact test"
Keywords:  charpy, izod, torsion, specimen, notch
A test performed at a specified temperature (usually lower than ambient) to determine the behavior of materials when subjected to high rates of loading, usually in bending, tension or torsion. The quantity measured is the energy absorbed in breaking the specimen by a single blow, as in a Charpy Test.
A test using, for example, an Izod or a Charpy notched specimen to determine the toughness of the metal by measuring the energy absorbed when the test specimen is fractured by a weighted pendulum.
Impact tests are used to determine a cable's susceptibility to damage when subjected to short time duration crushing forces. The test procedure usually is defined by the rate of impact, the shape and dimension of the striking device and the force of the impact.
