A very focused, directional light source
Undiffused light. Hard light results in sharply defined shadows. This is generally, but not always, undesirable. Any light source that can be obscured with your hand at arms length is considered hard. This includes flashes, spotlights, and (on a bright clear day) the sun. Hard light is usually very harsh and very contrasty.
