a learned Sikh who is skilled in reading the scriptures
the closest thing to a community leader of the Sikhs. This man (or man and wife team – never a woman on her own) leads the reading during services at the gurdwara, organises visits to anyone who is sick, teaches the children, arbitrates in arguments and officiates at ceremonies. There is a granthi in every gurdwara.
a reader of the Guru Granth Sahib Ji who officiates at ceremonies
Sikh official who reads from the Guru Granth Sahib at the gurdwara and also looks after the gurdwara.
One who performs the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at religious occassions, it may be a man or women.
A ceremonial reader of the Guru Granth Sahib. Duties include arranging daily religious services, reading from the Sikh scripture, maintaining the gurdwara premises, and teaching and advising community members. A granthi is not equivalent to a minister as there are no such religious intermediaries in the Sikh religious tradition.
Granthi (literal meaning: 'the keeper and the reader of the Sikh scripture'). The Granthi performs the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib at religious occasions, it may be a man or women. Granthi also performs the morning rights (prakash of Guru Granth Sahib), reading the paath and sukhasan.
