Like humans, cats can develop sore gums if they are allowed to accumulate plaque (food debris and bacteria) on the outside of their teeth. This hardens to form calculus. The bacteria can enter the bloodstream. Look out for bad breath, reddened gums, yellowish-brown tartar on teeth, and drooling. Your vet will descale the teeth, but take the opportunity to ask how to regularly brush your cat's teeth, and avoid these problems. Alternatively, ask your vet about feeding your cat a specialised dental diet.
