Definitions for "Fermata"
In musical notation, a sign (-) indicating the prolongation of a note or rest beyond its notated value.
The symbol within the musical score that signals that a note should be held longer than notated.
(Ital.) : Held out. At the fermata sign, the perfomer holds the pitch or chord at will (or at the will of the conductor). Occasionally the fermata sign serves the same function as the indication fine, i.e., an indication of the place to stop. Have a look.
