Commands that are used less often than other commands, and so are not automatically loaded into memory. To save space they are stored on disk instead. They have the file extension .COM or .EXE. When you enter an external command, the operating system retrieves the ``command file'' from disk and runs it. The memory used by the command is freed when it has finished its work.
