Definitions for "Erg"
Keywords:  dyne, joule, centimeter, cgs, gram
The unit of work or energy in the C. G. S. system, being the amount of work done by a dyne working through a distance of one centimeter; the amount of energy expended in moving a body one centimeter against a force of one dyne (981 dynes exert the same force as a one gram mass in the earth's gravitational field). One foot pound is equal to 13,560,000 ergs. The absolute Joule is equivalent to 107 ergs, which are equivalent to 0.2389 gram-calories at 15° C. See also mechanical equivalent of heat under equivalent.
A unit of energy in the metric system, corresponding to the work done by a force of one dyne (the force that is required to accelerate one gram by one cm/sec2) producing a displacement of one centimeter.
An extremely small amount of energy. Example: to raise a pound weight 1 foot would require about 13.6 million ergs.

Eye test used to determine if a dog/bitch is afflicted with PRA.
Electroretinography; a test done by an ophthalmologist to assess the functioning of the retina, the light sensing and vision producing layer of cells at the back of the eye. The disease PRA causes an abnormal ERG that can be measured earlier in some breeds than in others. To establish PRA affected status by ERG, it is necessary that a full diagnostic protocol be done with dogs under anesthesia or heavy sedation, and that the rod and cone contributions of the ERG be separately evaluated.
