Short form for Dura mater.
Short for dura mater spinalis, it describes the fibrous outermost membrane that surrounds the spinal cord. The related dura mater encephali surrounds the brain.
Layers of tissue covering the brain, the spinal cord, and nerve roots. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is contained within the dura. The dura can be injured in number of ways (this can cause what is called a CSF leak) and is rarely involved in diseases.

Dura is the name of a critically endangered language of Nepal, and of the ethnic group that historically spoke it. It belongs to the West Bodish group of Tibeto-Burman languages. The ethnic Dura people, whom the Nepal 2001 census numbered as 3,397, have mostly switched to speaking Nepali, and the Dura language has sometimes been thought to be extinct.
