Definitions for "Downscaling"
Keywords:  coarse, gcms, global, climate, scale
Reducing the scale of model output (e.g. from global to regional scale)
A process by which a program is converted to a lower resolution than its native format for display on a television. The process may also involve a conversion between progressive and interlaced scan formats. Downscaled content is typically less crisp and clear than its native resolution.
Deriving estimates of local climate elements (e.g. temperature, wind, rainfall), from the coarse resolution output of global climate models. Statistical downscaling uses present relationships between large scale climate variables and local variables. Nested regional climate modelling uses the coarse resolution output from a global climate model to drive a high resolution regional climate model.
