A device in the electrical circuit for varying the luminous flux from lamps in a lighting installation.
Control that varies the output of the light source by reducing the voltage or current to the lamp.
a rheostat that various the current through an electric light in order to control the level of illumination
The equipment that is used to set the brightness of the lighting.
In lighting, the electrical device (technically known as a potentiometer) that regulates the current passing through the bulb filaments and, thereby, the amount of light emitted from the lighting instruments.
a circuit that controls the electrical current flowing through the lights, allowing varying degrees of brightness in the bulb
A piece of equipment for varying the amount of electricity sent to a lantern, thus varying its brightness. Sometimes (inaccurately) used for the fader which controls the dimmer. Originally dimmers were variable resistors but now are either thyristors or triacs, i.e. they work electronically rather than by physically moving a resistor along a coil of wire. The verb "to dim" can be used to mean increase ("dim up") or reduce ("dim down") the amount of light, or even switch it off entirely ("dim out").
An electronic device that allows light levels to be adjusted from dim to full brightness.
A control that regulates light levels.
An electrical apparatus used to control the intensity of the lighting instrument to which it is circuited. Found on the lighting board.
A device used to control the intensity of light emitted by a luminaire by controlling the voltage or current available to it.
A light switch that controls the brightness of one or more lights. Most allow a full range of control from full off to full on.
Switch that allows you to vary the intensity of a light fixture
The part of a lighting system which controls the power to the lamp.
A device to control light intensity.
A device which causes connected lamps to decrease in intensity. Most dimmers for entertainment lighting use are some variation of an SCR. Individual dimmers are traditionally arranged in modules of two dimmers with modules combined into dimmer racks. See Also: Dimmer Rack SCR
A device used to regulate the voltage to a lamp and therefore allow its light intensity to be adjusted.
A dimmer reduces the amount of light given by a lightbulb, simply by reducing the power to the light source. Dimmers are great for enhancing atmosphere and reducing the amount of power used and can extend the life of all incandescent lightbulbs. (Please note that compact fluorescent lightbulbs typically cannot be dimmed.)
Device which provides adjustable voltage to a lighting fixture to control light output. Can also be a term to refer to a mechanical device, such as a shutter, that controls output.
A control switch that reduces the illumination of a lamp by lessening the electricity available to it. These may be incremental, or full range with rotary or slide controls.
A light control device that allows light levels to be manually adjusted. A dimmer can save energy by reducing the amount of power delivered to the light while consuming very little themselves.
