Definitions for "Cripple Stud"

a shorter stud that is found on either side of the door or window header opening.
For Rough-in frame work; the Two by Four (Stud) which is positioned (vertically) underneath the Header (Header support) and runs down to the bottom Plate (Two by Four). Cripples are also used to fill in the gaps between the Top Plate and the Header and the Sill Plate and Bottom Plate.
