Computerized Provider Order Entry. A computer application that allows a physician's orders for diagnostic and treatment services (such as medications, laboratory, and other tests) to be entered electronically instead of being recorded on order sheets or prescription pads. The computer compares the order against standards for dosing, checks for allergies or interactions with other medications, and warns the physician about potential problems.
Computerized physician order entry. An electronic prescribing system that intercepts errors at the time when medications are ordered. Physicians enter orders into a computer rather than on paper. Orders are integrated with patient information, including laboratory and prescription data. The order is then automatically checked for potential errors or problems.
Computerized physician order entry. CPOE are computer programs allowing for direct entry into a computer of orders for diagnostic tests, medications, patient care, and referrals by physicians or other health professionals.
