Conté crayons are hard and non-greasy sticks of color. They are often broken by the artists and the flat side is used to shade large areas of color. The edge is used to draw hard and dark lines.
A proprietary name for synthetic black, red or brown chalk. Nicolas Conté invented the modern lead pencil.
Initially it was a trade name for a brand of French crayons made from a unique compound of pigments with a chalk binder. Conte crayons are free from grease, making them acceptable for lithographic drawing.
