The hostname of a computer. It is often in the form of "something.eng.iastate.edu". To find the computer name of either a Windows or Unix (Linux) machine, open a command shell (on Windows: Start - Run - Open: "cmd" - Ok) and type "hostname".

A unique name of up to 15 uppercase characters that identifies a computer to the network. The name cannot be the same as any other computer or domain name in the network.

A name that uniquely identifies a computer on the network so that all its shared resources can be accessed by other computers on the network. One computer name cannot be the same as any other computer or domain name on the network.
