Commissar is the English transliteration of an official title (комиÑÑаÌÑ€) used in Russia after the Bolshevik revolution and in the Soviet Union, as well as some other Communist countries.
Commissar is a 1967 Soviet movie based on one of Vasily Grossman's first short stories, In the town of Berdichev ("В городе Бердичеве"). The main characters were masterfully played by two People's Artists of the USSR, Rolan Bykov and Nonna Mordyukova. Made on Gorky Film Studio.
Commissar is a term used in the fictional Warhammer 40,000 universe to represent a political field officer in the regiments of the Imperial Guard. They have the duty to maintain the morale of the troops on their massive campaigns, often in the face of staggering casualties. The Imperial Commissar, as described by many Warhammer 40,000 novelists, is given complete jurisdiction to judge the actions of any trooper or officer of a rank junior to his own and to act accordingly.
