A term to describe a planet extremely close to the Sun. The meaning of "close" varies from one astrologer to the next, but is typically within 3 to 8 degrees of the Sun. A combust planet is considered weakened (literally burnt up by the rays of the Sun) in influence and the qualities of that planet are deeply tied into one's personal identity (the Sun).
cause to burn or combust; "The sun burned off the fog"; "We combust coal and other fossil fuels"
start to burn or burst into flames; "Marsh gases ignited suddenly"; "The oily rags combusted spontaneously"
undergo combustion; "Maple wood burns well"
An ancient astrological term used to describe a planet that has lost some of its energy because it is located extremely closely to the sun in the birth chart.
When a planet is positioned in the same sign as the Sun and is less than 8 degrees away from the Sun, it is said to be combust. This is a consideration in Horary astrology. Combustion implies that the action of the planet is weakened.
When a planet is vey near the Sun in the birth chart, it is theorized that the planet loses some of its force.
A planet is said to be Combust when it falls between 17 minutes and 8.5 degrees by conjunction from the Sun and is in the same sign as the Sun. Combustion debilitates the planet. The exception to this rule is Mars, as it is similar in nature to the Sun, being both hot and dry like the Sun.
A planet that forms a conjunction with the Sun within orb of between 31' to 3° is said to be combust. The energy of a combust planet is integrated with that of the Sun in such a way that the planet does not operate independently.
A planet placed within 8 degrees 30 minutes (but not within 17 minutes) of the Sun. Meaning "burnt", this is not a favourable condition, especially for the Moon and inner planets when direct in motion and applying to the corporeal conjunction. See Cazimi, also Under Beams.
