All provinces allow for the grouping of numerous claims under one "representative action" or "class action." More recently, Quebec, Ontario and British Columbia have made it easier for class action suits to be started. The purpose of a class action is to permit a large number of individuals who have suffered similar losses or injuries to band together in one efficient lawsuit. The cost savings gained through this process benefit those who would not have been able to pursue their case individually. With a class action, consumers with legitimate, but otherwise uneconomical cases, can afford to go to court.
