the various patterns that a musician plays, including basic scales. When blues musicians get together for jam sessions, players of the same instrument sometimes engage in musical duels in front of a rhythm section to see who has the "hottest chops" (plays best).
Slang term refering to a musicians skills on his or her instrument.
Ability to play an instrument. To have great chops is to be technically or stylistically profient on a musical instrument.
