CD audio copy protection technology originally developed by the Israeli company Midbar Tech, which was acquired by Macrovision in December 2002 and further developed since then. Three versions are available, CDS-100, CDS-200 and CDS-300, the last two including a second CD-ROM session containing compressed audio files, which play on a PC. CDS-300 also includes DRM features allowing limited copying of the audio tracks on a protected CD.
Census Districts. The smallest areal unit used by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in the collection of statistical data such as those in the Census of Population and Housing. Rural and urban CDs differ in the number of households captured within their boundaries.
Command and Data Subsystem. The "Master Computer" of the spacecraft. The CDS provides the interface between the ground and the spacecraft. All commands are either directed to the CDS, passed by the CDS to other subsystems (eg AACS), or control relays directly. The CDS also collects data from all the subsystems and science instruments and formats them for transmission to the ground. The CDS has two strings also. In addition, complete copies of the flight software are in the normal and extended (spare) memory on each string, to enable rapid switching in case of a memory failure on one string. More information on the CDS.
CDS is a unit within the Division of Special Services within Maine's Department of Education and (DOE) is responsible for the early intervention and other services provided to children from birth to age 5.
Cadmium Sulfide (Cell). A battery powered, current-modulating. light-sensing cell that was quite popular with lots of cameras exposure metering system and external metering devices. May be this extra will help, photo conductive material used in exposure meters as alternative to selenium-based or silicon blue photocells. Its electrical resistance decreases as the light falling on it increases. Cds meters use current from an external power source, such as a battery.
Continuous deflective separation. a variation of the vortex separator technology. It consists of a cylindrical tank which utilizes a physical barrier, typically a fine screen, between the influent flow and outlet discharges. Flows enter the CDS tank tangentially and are deflected from the discharge by entering a deep sump. Flows are conveyed into the center of the sump and must pass through a screen before proceeding to the discharge. The continuous swirling action in the sump causes heavier solids to fall to the bottom and keeps them away from the screen, thereby eliminating the need for a cleaning mechanism. Solids accumulated in the bottom of the sump must be removed at the conclusion of a storm event.
Certificates of Deposits are negotiable money market instruments which certify that a time deposit has been made with a bank at a fixed interest rate for a fixed period. The instrument is quoted on as interest bearing face value basis rather than at a discount and interest is paid at maturity. See Fixed Term Deposit, Term CDs, Variable Rate or Floating Rate CDs, Eurodollar CDs, Sterling CDs.

Circular Date Stamp. A circular postmark that denotes the name of town or city on the outside and has a date (and time, sometimes) in the middle. Some collectibles feature the popular double ring cds.

In a GenBank DNA sequence entry, "cds" stands for coding sequence. A coding sequence is a subsequence of a DNA sequence that is surmised to encode a gene. A coding sequence begins with an "ATG" and ends with a stop codon. In the cases of spliced genes, all exons and introns should be within the same cds.

Central Depositary System. The CDS is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Colombo Stock Exchange. The CDS undertakes clearing, settlement and registration of shares. The main objectives of the System are to maintain shares on behalf of its clients and to act as a trustee for quoted securities.

Cactus Data Shield, a CD audio copy protection technology developed by the Israeli company Midbar Tech. Two versions are available, CDS100 and CDS200, the latter including a second CD-ROM session containing compressed audio files, which play on a PC. Midbar Tech was acquired by Macrovision in December 2002 and new CD copy protection systems will comprise the best of the two companies' technologies.

Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer, or in other words it is a Spectrometer designed to Diagnose the solar Corona - so maybe it should have been called the SDC! An ultraviolet spectrometer aboard SOHO, designed to study the solar spectrum from 18 to 80 nanometres. Many of the spectra and images illustrated on these web pages were obtained with the CDS.
Credit Default Swap. A credit derivative transaction in which two parties enter into an agreement, whereby one party pays the other a fixed periodic coupon for the specified life of the agreement. The other party makes no payment unless a credit event, relating to a predetermined reference asset, occurs. If such an event occurs, the party will then make a payment to the first party, and the swap will terminate. The size of the payment is usually linked to the decline in the reference asset's market value following the determination of the occurrence of a credit event. Thus, type of insurance. If you go long CDS, you are a protection buyer and have to pay the premium (e.g. 100bp on notional) up-front to the counterparty. In case of a credit event, leading to the default of the underlying security, the swap counterparty compensates you for your losses and you are protected. The higher the risk, the higher the CDS level, the higher the insurance premium.
