A dilated segment at the base of the internal carotid artery whose walls contain baroreceptors sensitive to changes in blood pressure.
Dilatation at base of internal carotid artery; elastic wall contains stretch receptors (baroreceptors) that are continuously sensing arterial blood pressure. See also baroreceptor reflex.
