The substance which remains when a metal or mineral has been subjected to calcination or combustion by heat, and which is, or may be, reduced to a fine powder.
(plural calces): a metal oxide (earth), the result of roasting a metal or mineral. [Lavoisier 1, Rey, Stahl] Sometimes used for a particular calx, namely lime.
The powder formed when metals react with air.
