The national voluntary nonprofit organization of professional medical personnel, composed of state and territorial medical societies and component county medical societies. The AMA attempts to speak for physicians nationally, conducts educational and publication services to members, and (with member's dues) sponsors research to improve medical knowledge. The AMA advocates for the medical profession and for public health.
